..if a band director was disparaging an autistic student?
(It has never happened to me)
Situation 1: Band director repeatedly yells at Student for no reason. Student cries and can't say anything.
Situation 2: Band Director is trying to teach Student a concert b flat scale. Student makes several mistakes and Band Director says "You know what, autistic people never learn anything," and gives up.
Reactions: Sit. 1
Other students: That's just wrong. What if that was you?
Nearby Teacher: You shouldn't yell at students for no reason, special needs or not.
Retaliations for Sit. 1:
It's not me.
Student causes me a lot of stress.
Counter-Reactions for Sit. 1
A heart for music is a heart for all. You should know that.
So do mine, but that's no excuse for what you did.
Sit. 2 Reactions
Other Students: You're slowing the entire band down!
The Wonderful English Teacher: Many teachers have sinned against their students, but giving up on one is unforgivable.
Non-Band Students: That's right! No one should be given up on!
Sit. 2 Retaliations:
Other Srudents: Yeah, but she's so slow to do things!
She's such a burden. I feel sorry for you.
Band Students: We would have been on the page 28 if this waste of human life wasn't in band!
Counter-Reactions:
Principal: I don't know what talking about! One student needing more time than the rest is no excuse to give up on the one!
The Wonderful English Teacher: It's not about how long you take. It's about whether you are satisfied with yourself.
Student's friend: She's not a waste of human life. Needing more time does not make you a waste of human life. Everyone serves a purpose in the world.
